Active Breaks Challenge
Active Walkway Challenge
April / May 2022
We completed the Active Walkway Challenge as a whole school. We spent time enjoying the walkway doing different challenges at the signs - some classes focused on their fundamental movement skills and others decided to practise their tables at each sign. Most classes went beyond our school grounds to the nearby Blue Way, just beside our school. It's a beautiful walk along the river Suir and if you haven't already tried it, we would encourage it.
As a whole school, we have set ourselves a "Run Around Ireland" Challenge!! Our goal is to run the distance to the Spire in Dublin and Back as a whole school by counting the distances of our daily laps combined. This is really good for developing children's overall fitness.
Mrs Skehan and/or Ms Kirwan met the Active Schools Committee students regularly and they continued to monitor and be responsible for the yard equiptment. The children made suggestion boxes for their classrooms and we went through the many fantastic ideas that they had to make the school more active.
We have also held Active Easter Egg Hunts at Easter. Ms Kirwan and Mrs Skehan's classes combined this with the PE Strand Orienteering and the children had a ball!!

January / February 2022
Each class has been asked to complete daily laps of the yard with an aim to improving the student’s overall fitness and the skill of running. Classes began running for different lengths of time with an aim to increase this time each week.
Providing the students with PE equipment on the yard at break-time has been a huge success. It has not only improved their fitness and worked on various skills for example skipping, but it has also encouraged the students to play together and co-operate more while taking part in different games.

Check out our Zombie Walk in October 2021!!!New Yard Equiptment!!! Hooray!!!September/October 2021We were very busy this year getting the school active and back on track with sports. First of all, we elected a new Active Schools Committee/Students Council. Students from 3rd to 6th Classes wrote a letter of application and a new committee was formed. On our committee we have Sadhbh Patterson, Kate Carey, Ellen Condon, Zoe Hewitt, Arianna Smyth Fernandes, Orna Doran, Lilianna Stankiewiez, Kate Hewitt and Alexander Matess.
Mrs Skehan and Ms Kirwan have agreed to lead up the application for the Active Schools Flag. Mrs Skehan has attended webinars ran by the Active Schools national body. We did staff surveys to assess where we are at with P.E., physical activity and our sporting partnerships and which areas we need to develop. We applied for staff training in the area of outdoor and adventure. The first task was to get the playgrounds more active! The committee met and put bags of equipment together for the different playgrounds. We agreed a plan to keep things safe and how to manage the equipment. We bought new skipping ropes and balls. The children loved having the new equipment at yard time and the had a ball!! We set up football with Brian Whyte from Commercials and Barry Bourke from the Camogie Association. More details on these are in our Partnerships section. Spooky!!! At Halloween, we went on a zombie walk through the active walkway. Little did we know what was awaiting us!!! 6th class pupils had decorated the walkway to make it spooky and even the teachers were scared walking through it!! Rang 6 learn to 'Cycle Right'
The girls in 6th Class learned cycling lessons for a few weeks in December and January with Olly and Dónal. The coaches taught us how to cycle safely and the main points about road safety. Before every lesson pupils had to put on a helmet for their safety. We practised in our school yard and played some games and challenges on the bikes. We learned the ready position, how to turn corners and how to indicate. During one lesson we watched a short video on safety and answered quiz questions. The last lesson took place in the car park so that we could practise real right and left turns and get used to the road markings.
Everyone loved the lessons and learned a lot about how to cycle safely.
