March / April 2022
A huge thank you to our friends and coaches in St Marys Camogie Club who have been helping us improve and develop our teams to date. The activities have been nonstop this year and March and April have been no different. Camogie training has been continuing every Friday with extra training for 5th and 6th midweek in preparation for upcoming blitzes. They took part in a blitz in Cashel at the end of April, playing four games in total. The girls did the school very proud, and it was great having the girls represent the school in the Cumann na mBunscol blitz. The camogie team from 4th class has outdone themselves in their camogie blitz in Powerstown. They are now into the county semi-final!!! 3rd classes also participated in a blitz in New Inn. They displayed great skill and they are a very strong team!! Here to the start of great things to come.
January / February 2022
Kick starting the new year on an active note. It has been a very busy two months of activities and training. Camogie training has been taking place every Friday from First to Sixth class. The aim is to begin entering a 5th and 6th class team and a 3rd and 4th class team into blitzes later in the year. Brian Whyte from Commercials Football Club, an external football coach has been coming every Thursday to work with the girls in 1st, 2nd and 3rd classes and also Mr Connery’s senior infants on their Gaelic football skills and we encourage them to join a club in Clonmel.
Learn to Cycle Right 2022!!
Cycling starts for 6th class in January 2022. The girls are enjoying learning and developing their cycling skills every Wednesday morning with the Cycle Right programme, which trains children to ensure that cyclists know how to cycle safely. November/December 2021
Gaelic football continues for Mr. Connery’s senior infants class, 4th class, 5th class and 6th class in October, November and December with Brian Whyte.
Camogie continues for 3rd and 4th classes in November and December in the all-weather pitch. The children’s skills are improving well and they are emerging as great players!!
September and October 2021
In October, Brian Whyte from Commercials GAA Club started back training the children in gaelic football. The children are developing their football skills really well and many are turning into wonderful players. Any children who are interested in playing with a club should ask Brian, Mrs Skehan or Mrs Keane about joining St. Mary’s. New players are always welcome in the club. Brian started coaching Mr. Connery’s senior infants class, 4th class, 5th class and 6th class in October.
Donal Keane and Paddy Bond met with Mrs Skehan in October. They put a plan in place for Barry Bourke from the Camogie Association together with some transition year students Holly Hayes, Hazel Brennan and Grainne Power to train camogie in the school. With St. Mary’s Hurling and Camogie Club just on our doorstep, we encourage any children interested in these sports to join. Any child who is interested could ask Mrs Skehan or Mrs Keane about joining. 3rd and 4th classes started camogie training and they enjoyed playing the sport in the all-weather pitch in October.
Cross Country Athletics in Marylfield October 2019
Well done to Emer Brennan and Kate Carey who came second and third in the cross country athletics competitions in Marlyfield, Clonmel on 23rd of October 2019.
Our teams of girls from 3rd to 6th classes completed the cross country races of 600m and 800m with ease. Well done girls, your training has paid off!!
We have GAA training with Andy Griffin from St. Mary’s Club on Fridays. This is what Tanisha Adurkar in 1st class had to say about hurling.
“Hurling is good for your health.
Hurling is good for energy.
Hurling is so much fun!
The coach will do fun hurling.
You can do hurling at school, at the park, in your garden, in your back yard.
You must wear a helmet for safety.
You should always be safe when you play hurling.
Hurling is great exercise!”

“We’ve just finished our eight weeks of swimming in Clonmel Pool. I was in Survival One. My teacher was Alesia O’Kelly. She taught us how to swim with clothes and take off clothes while in the water. She also helped us make floaties with our clothes. We practiced doing the help position, which we can use if we ever get stuck out at sea. We jumped off diving boards. I think it’s great because people like me could not swim in 2nd class and we are now in survival. I would definetly recommend going there for lessons and fun. It’s also a great way to exercise!”

Rang 6 learn to cycle right!
What is Cycle Right?CYCLE RIGHT is the National Standard for Cycle Training. It provides training to ensure that cyclists know how to cycle safely. CYCLE RIGHT is produced and supported by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, the Road Safety Authority and Cycling Ireland. The girls in Rang 6 were delighted to avail of training from two coaches from Cycle Right.
Here is what Áine from Rang 6 had to say:
'The girls in 6th Class learned cycling lessons for a few weeks with Ollie and Dónal. The coaches taught 6th Class how to cycle safely and the main points about road safety. Before every lesson pupils had to put a helmet on for their safety. 6th class practised in their school yard and played some games and challenges on their bikes. They learned 'the ready position', how to turn corners and how to indicate. During one lesson pupils watched a short video on safety and answered quiz questions. The last lesson took place in the car park so that pupils could practise real right and left turns and get used to the road markings.
Everyone loved the lessons and learned a lot about how to cycle safely.
