We are making great strides at progressing through our year plan covering the Fundamental Movement Skills, using the Move Well, Move Often programme.

The PE strand focused on was Games which was aided by the assistance of external Gaelic football and camogie coaches. Kicking, striking with the hand, striking with an implement, and dodging were the focus of our Fundamental Movement Skills with teachers engaging with resources and videos on Scoilnet to assist their teaching. Daily laps are continuing, and the classes are building on their time and mastering the skill of running. PE homework and PE equipment on the yard at break-time have all continued also.

We welcomed Liam Clohessy from PDST to carry out some in school training with the staff with a focus on the strand of Outdoor and Adventure. During the day Liam took several classes for a lesson wherein in class teachers observed his teaching and the different strategies and methodologies he used. Following on from this Liam did training with the staff after school. All staff found this very beneficial and look forward to implementing the different strategies demonstrated by Liam throughout the day.

January and February 2022

The PE strands focused on were Gymnastics and Dance for January and February respectively. Jumping for height and side-stepping were the Fundamental movement skills worked on for the two months also. Students were shown a step-by-step instructional video on how to master each skill. Class teachers were encouraged to use peer and self-assessment when assessing the attainment of each skill.

September 2021
Physical Education – A whole School Plan!!

The staff met in September 2021 and discussed the need to go back to using our whole school plan, choosing a strand and a Fundamental Movement Skill to work on every month.  We agreed to focus on four FMSs in the year.  These are jumping for height, landing, sidestepping and hopping.

We learn so much about Physical Education in our school.  Below is a short outline of some of what we are doing....

  • We teach the strands of the Pysical Education every week in school.  The strands are Gymnastics, Athletics, Games, Dance, Aquatics (2nd to 6th classes only) and Outdoor and Adventure Activities.
  • We teach P.E. for an hour a week and we usually give some discretionary time to being active too.
  • On 21st November 2018, Mrs Skehan went to a HPS workshop in Kilkenny in Mental Health and Wellbeing – Healthy Teacher Healthy Pupil.  She gave staff feedback from this course and staff completed some of the activities covered in staff meetings.
  • On 7th of December, Mrs Skehan went on an orienteering course – Ready To Go Orienteering in CBS Highschool, Clonmel.  We plan to work more on this next school year, when we focus on outdoor and adventure, orienteering.
  • Ms Lambert attended a Health Promoting Schools Workshop in February about being an Active School.
  • On February 14th Liam Clohessy from PDST gave a workshop to school staff in gymnastics.  He did some demo-lessons during the day and then whole staff training after school.  Staff learned all about teaching the fundamental movement skills, gymnastics and we also worked on our whole school plan.
  • On the 10th of April, Ms Kennedy and Mrs Skehan are going for training in “Move Well, Move Often,”  developing the physically literate Pupil through the lens of Fundamental Movement Skills.  They are due to provide feedback on this at a staff meeting in May.
